Even though New York may be one of the most popular and visited cities in the United States, there is still much to uncover in the Big Apple. Here are some interesting and lesser-known facts about NYC that you may not know.

Surprising Things You Didn’t Know About NYC

1. New York City has the World’s First Underground Park

Due to the popular success of the city’s elevated public park the High Line, the city introduced the concept of the Lowline earlier this year. The Lowline will be the world’s first underground park, which hopefully will be completed by 2021. The Lowline will be an all-natural green space, using innovative solar technology to transmit sunlight throughout the park via a reflective surface underground. The park takes place in an abandoned trolley terminal, known previously as the Williamsburg Bridge Trolley Terminal, dating back to 1908. The underground park hopes to bring back some green to the city, and it’s a must visit once the park is open!

2. New York City has a ‘Little Britain’

Although unofficial at the moment, New York City may be the first to have a ‘Little Britain.’ In the West Village, small shops around Greenwich Avenue have become a favorite among British admirers. One of the area’s most popular venues is Tea & Sympathy, which is a small café themed after a traditional English tearoom. British celebrities have reportedly been visiting the café for nearly 17 years, including the late David Bowie, Joss Stone, and Kate Moss. The café offers some of Britain’s classic comfort foods on their menu like bangers n’ mash, Yorkshire pudding, rhubarb crumble, and traditional afternoon tea served with scones. Other UK-themed shops nearby include A Salt and Battery – a popular fish and chips shop – and Myers of Keswick, where you can find traditional British food like meat pies! Although the area has yet to receive the official title of ‘Little Britain,’ there’s an official campaign out there to gain the areas recognition.

3. New York City has a Waterfall in Central Park

Central Park is a one of New York City’s most famous attractions. But what you may not know is that hidden away in the North Woods, a 40-acre woodland part of Central Park, is a serene waterfall drowning out the noise of the city. Known as the Ravine, the waterfall is the park’s only stream valley that was created by an inlet dammed in several places to create the beautiful cascades. The intention of the park’s designers was to make this area of the park resemble the wilderness of the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. It’s definitely a sight to see when you visit!

4. New York City has Urban Wineries

Are you a wine lover? Luckily, New York City is home to two different urban wineries: City Winery and Brooklyn Winery. City Winery offers a variety of programs where you have the opportunity to make your own wine. Here, you get the chance to touch and feel all the aspects of the winemaking process, and the opportunity to create your own private barrel or bottle. Tasting flights are also available to taste their award-winning wine list featuring over 400 wines. You can also play winemaker for a day at Brooklyn Winery. You can book a private blending session or tour their 8,000 square foot winery to see what’s happening behind the scenes.

5. Governors Island Has the Best View of New York City

Last year, Governors Island opened one of New York City’s newest landmarks called ‘The Hills.’ The 10-acre park is made of four hills that pay tribute to the hilly landscapes of pre-colonial Manhattan. This includes Outlook Hill, where you can enjoy the best views of Manhattan and Brooklyn, as well as the best 360-degree panoramas of New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty, and Jersey City in the far distance. The park is also home to the longest slide in the city at Slide Hill, and houses sculptural pieces of art on Discovery Hill that is truly something to admire. The Hills is open till the end of October, so don’t miss your chance to visit this amazing spot in the city.
